DEVIL (2010)

No matter how hard you guess who the devil is? (if only you haven’t heard the spoiler before), I bet you won’t get the right answer easily. Where there are only five alternatives to choose from. The five are the mechanic (Logan Marshall-Green), the young woman (Bojana Novakovic), the old woman (Jenny O’Hara), the salesman (Geoffrey Arend) and the security guard (Bokeem Woodbine), by the way thiz guy really reminds me of Samuel L. Jackson’s figure. Thiz situation also involves a police detective (Chris Messina). It’s awesome, what M. Night Shyamalan has done to thiz movie, the script is solid, there are plenty of deceiving aspects here, every time we get a clue on who the murderer is, the plot turns around again to the other direction. It’s simply a classic! Just like Hercule Poirot’s case, people gather around in a house, lights off, someone die and we have to figure out who is the murder among them. But only thiz time it is not in a house, it’s in an elevator! I have to say the opening title is extremely awesome, I like how they creates the tension with the upside-down skyscraper landscape and thrilling Score. The movie is directed by John Erick Dowdle. Dowdle is known for “Quarantine” (2008) which is a remake from the most talked-about Spanish horror “[Rec]” in 2007. Apparently, Dowdle has potential ability to dig every necessary element to direct his Actors properly. Every one of these mediocre Actors has done their job very well indeed, don’t need Robert De Niro in that elevator, however the most powerful factor in thiz film is in the script itself. And the script is able to conclude nicely at the end of the movie, the thing that didn’t happen to Shyamalan’s previous feature “The Happening” (2008). It’s good to see Shyamalan back to his game again, which is an effective smart thriller. His best work so far is still “The Sixth Sense” (1999). Only if he doesn’t fall back again into his pop experimental flick like “The Last Air Blunder” not long ago... Upss, I mean “The Last Airbender” (2010), we may able to see a new Hitchcock is reborn, can’t wait for another Night’s Chronicles.
